Chocolate Cherry Trifle

Ingredients:
  • 1 packet Chocolate Covered Cherry Dip Mix, prepared according to directions
  • 1 pkg. (13 - 15.25 oz.) chocolate cake mix, prepared according to directions on package
  • 2 pkgs (8 oz. ea.) cream cheese, softened
  • 1 cup confectioners’ powdered sugar
  • 1/2 tsp. almond or vanilla extract
  • 1 container (16 oz.) whipped topping, thawed, divided
  • 2 pkgs. (3.9 oz. ea.) instant chocolate pudding mix*
  • 2-3/4 cups cold milk
  • garnish: shaved chocolate & maraschino cherries
  • large glass trifle bowl (mini 10" diameter -or- 9"x13" baking dish
Directions:
Prepare chocolate cake per directions on package for 13x9-in pan. After cake is done allow to cool completely, cut into cubes. Place cake around the inside perimeter of trifle bowl. In a separate bowl using a mixer blend one 8 oz. pkg cream cheese, sour cream and Chocolate Covered Cherry Dip Mix. After well blended fold in 3 cups whipped topping until combined. Spread mixture into bottle of the trifle bowl. Again using mixer blend remaining 8 oz. cream cheese, powdered sugar and almond or vanilla extract until smooth, and fold in 2 cups whipped topping. Spread evenly over Chocolate Covered Cherry layer. Combine pudding mixes and milk. Whisk for 2 minutes and then pour into trifle bowl over other layers. Pudding mixture will seep down in between cake cubes. Gently jiggle bowl to help pudding settle. Cover and refrigerate several hours or until set. Top with remaining whipped topping and garnish with shaved chocolate and maraschino cherries. Makes 9 to 12 servings.
